--- Welcome to Our Child Headed House Hold Support Page
Of the 7.2 million households in the country, about 28,800 are child-headed and face severe financial constraints that quite often push them to drug and substance abuse, transactional sex and involvement in crime. A majority of the Teen Moms supported by WWF were in situations of Child Headed Households (CHHs) during the pandemic lockdowns. Many of the children are living in poverty and hunger, exacerbated by COVID-19 lockdowns, the AIDS epidemic, which has had a serious impact on rural Teso communities. The CHH is a common reality in Teso Sub Region which has largely has the characteristic of post-conflict situations which disintegrated family set-ups and increased the ravaging effects of HIV/AIDS.
- Priority needs of these children include shelter, food, a reliable source of income, education and health. WWF currently supports a total of 20 CHHs with a total of 60 Children with education, feeding, medical care, social protection services, psychosocial support and spiritual nurturing. In the next 5 years; we aim to achieve a target of extending this support to 1,000 children through a holistic sponsorship programme designed around the basic right to education, health, a clean and safe environment and parental care. We plan to build a comprehensive school which will provide quality education and skills training for all our children.
- Success in the CHH project will look like; reduced vulnerability among OVC, improved school completions among OVCs, improved skillsets among OVCs, cottage industry by OVCs and overall competence of CHHs to viably contribute to social economic development.
