--- Welcome to Our Teen Mom's Page
Uganda has a teenage pregnancy problem! An average of 1,000 teenage pregnancies are reported in Uganda on a daily basis. The country has a teenage pregnancy rate of 25%, the highest in East Africa. In Teso Sub Region; the average is higher than the national statistics at a staggering 31%. During the WWF scoping exercise in Katakwi District in North Eastern Uganda, over 9,000 teen mothers were recorded in the aftermath of the COVID-19 lockdown.
Teen moms in Uganda usually suffer at least one or more of the following situations: Unsafe abortions, lack of proper medical attention, malnutrition and food insecurity, physical and psychological trauma, loss of education, child neglect, loss of parental and or adult guidance, loss of livelihood and mental illness.
- WWF Teen Mom’s Support Project is intended to help the country grapple with this problem. Our approach first and foremost is community engagements that aim at preventing teenage pregnancies through sensitization to combat child marriage, early unprotected sex and negative social practices that predispose children to early exposure to sexual content. Our target is to engage 30 communities in 5 Districts over the next 5 years.

The project also supports teenagers through pregnancy and postpartum care by providing trauma counselling, medical support, food and nutritional supplementation, skilling and business support as well as safe shelter. These will be done through a mobile safe teen clinic targeting 30 communities, a safe home for at least 1,000 teen moms in the next 5 years, a skilling programme for all teen moms in the 30 communities and promotion of cottage industry and businesses

Success in the WWF Teen Mom support project will involve: significant reduction in the external push factors for child sexual abuse and exploitation, reduction in teen mom poverty and despondency, improved access to formal and informal education among teen moms and provision of continuing opportunities for teens who get pregnant to lead meaningful community lives.
